The Premier League has issued a statement clarifying its decision to award Newcastle United a penalty during their match against Nottingham Forest at St. James’ Park.
The Magpies were given the perfect opportunity to increase their lead when VAR intervened, sending official Jared Gillett to the monitor to inspect the scene.
VAR advised an on-field review for a probable handball by Aina
The Australian, who had initially denied a penalty kick, reversed his decision, allowing Alexander Isak to score from 12 yards, squeezing his shot past former Magpie Matz Selz.
It happened after Lewis Hall’s initial cross was found to have been blocked by Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina’s arm. The full-back jumped, turned his back, and the cross appeared to strike the 28-year-old’s left arm.
In a post on X, Premier League Match Centre stated that VAR advised an on-field review for a probable handball by Aina, with his arm assessed to be in an unusual position.

“Upon review, the referee awarded a penalty to Newcastle United.”

Eddie Howe’s team got off to the worst possible start when Callum Hudson-Odoi took advantage of Nick Pope’s poor positioning and curled home from long range. Newcastle, on the other hand, pressed for an equaliser, putting Forest under a lot of strain.
The visitors eventually fell, with the first half going in their favour. Lewis Miley equalised with a well-placed volley, and equilibrium was only restored for a few minutes before Jacob Murphy bundled home to give Newcastle the lead.

The overturning of Gillett’s initial ruling allowed the hosts to take a two-goal lead, and Isak made no mistakes.
Just a minute later, the 25-year-old scored his second of the afternoon, lifting the ball over Selz after breaking through the Forest backline.
