After crisis meetings with President Donald Trump on Monday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a 30-day halt to swinging tit-for-tat tariffs and promised to move forward with a massive round of border security measures.
He claimed he was establishing a fentanyl czar and sending extra staff and technology to the border.
He wrote on X, “I just had a good call with President Trump.”
Canada is carrying out its $1.3 billion border plan, which includes bolstering the border with new personnel, technology, and helicopters, improving communication with our U.S. partners, and allocating more funds to halt the flow of fentanyl.
“The border is being and will continue to be guarded by nearly 10,000 frontline personnel.”
Although Canadians noted that Trudeau was merely restating a proposal that had been outlined in December, White House officials declared triumph.
Trump’s own article on Truth Social verified the stop.
It follows Trump’s announcement over the weekend that he was getting ready to impose 25% tariffs on imports from countries north of the border.
In response, Canada declared its own tariffs on a number of American products.
However, after the two leaders spoke over the phone, all of that vanished.
“This is a win,” a senior White House official declared.
“There were many skeptics who didn’t seem to remember that we have the largest economy in the world.”
Trump affirmed the deal.
“I am doing everything in my power as president to ensure the safety of all Americans,” he added.
“I am really happy with this first result, and the tariffs that were announced on Saturday will be put on hold for 30 days to see if a final economic agreement with Canada can be arranged.”
When Mexico’s president agreed to fortify the country’s border with 10,000 National Guard personnel in an attempt to stop the drug flow, Trump halted equivalent levies on Mexico just hours before.
Trump declared that he will continue to negotiate with Mexico during the one-month delay.
“As we try to reach a ‘deal’ between our two countries, I look forward to taking part in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum,” he wrote on Truth Social.
Stock markets plunged sharply as a result of the threats, which sparked worries of a worldwide trade war.
Additionally, Canada, a longtime ally of Washington, responded to being targeted by Trump with a mixture of shock and desperation.
Trudeau discussed the sense of betrayal that many Canadians were experiencing in a speech over the weekend.
“The American people, we were always there, standing with you, grieving with you,” he remarked.
“We provide them with military protection.” They are not required to construct our automobiles. I would rather that the automobiles be built in Tennessee, South Carolina, Detroit, or any other state.
