Texas Tech Football Coach Joey McGuire Responds to Deion Sanders’ Spring Game Proposal

Several college football programs have opted to cancel their spring games, but Colorado head coach Deion Sanders proposed an alternative: teams should scrimmage against each other in the spring. Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire is eager to participate.

In response to Sanders’ idea, McGuire expressed interest in a matchup between the Red Raiders and the Buffaloes.

“@DeionSanders let’s work on a waiver for a spring practice together and do it in Dallas at The Star! We are in,” McGuire posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Unfortunately for McGuire, Sanders and Colorado may have already found an opponent: Syracuse.

Like McGuire, Syracuse head coach Fran Brown showed interest in facing Colorado in a spring scrimmage.

“We will come to Boulder for 3 days,” Brown posted on X, which seemed to capture Sanders’ attention.

The process has moved quickly, as a Syracuse representative confirmed that both Colorado and Syracuse have submitted waiver requests to hold a joint spring scrimmage. However, it remains uncertain whether the NCAA will approve it.

Currently, NCAA rules prohibit teams from scrimmaging each other in the spring. The practice is common in the NFL preseason but often leads to fights between teams.

Even though Syracuse and Colorado appear likely to scrimmage if approved, Texas Tech has received plenty of positive news recently. The Red Raiders have excelled in the transfer portal, investing heavily to strengthen McGuire’s roster.

Notable additions include edge rusher Romello Height from Georgia Tech, defensive linemen Skyler Gill-Howard and Lee Hunter from Northern Illinois and UCF, respectively, and offensive tackle Howard Sampson from North Carolina. Additionally, former five-star receiver Micah Hudson, who transferred to Texas A&M, was reportedly spotted on Texas Tech’s campus in January.

Since becoming Texas Tech’s head coach, McGuire has a 23-16 record over three seasons. Last year, he secured six Big 12 victories, marking his best conference performance in Lubbock so far.
