In a move that signals both a fresh chapter and a homecoming, powerful second-rower Kelma Tuilagi has officially agreed to terms with the Melbourne Storm on a one-year contract for the 2027 National Rugby League (NRL) season. The announcement confirms that Tuilagi will depart the Parramatta Eels at the conclusion of his current commitments, returning to the very club where his professional rugby league journey first gathered momentum.
While Tuilagi forged his first-grade reputation away from Victoria, his ties to the region run deep. Having developed through the local grassroots system, the hard-running forward now completes a emotional narrative arc by securing a place in Craig Bellamy’s forward rotation for 2027.
Roots in Victorian Rugby League
Born in Samoa and raised in New Zealand, Tuilagi relocated to Melbourne as a youth. He attended Hallam Senior College, a renowned nursery for sporting talent in Victoria, while rising through local ranks with the Casey Warriors and Victorian Thunderbolts. His impressive combination of physical size and lateral agility caught the attention of Melbourne Storm talent scouts, leading to his inclusion in the club’s elite development system.
By 2020, Tuilagi had earned a spot in Melbourne’s extended NRL squad during the extraordinary, COVID-impacted campaign based on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. Although he shared in the camaraderie and high-performance environment of the Storm’s 2020 premiership-winning squad, he was unable to break into the matchday seventeen for an official NRL debut.
Building First-Grade Credentials Across Sydney
Seeking an immediate pathway to top-flight footy, Tuilagi departed Melbourne ahead of the 2021 season to join the Wests Tigers. It was in Concord that the versatile forward finally earned his NRL debut during Round 20 against the New Zealand Warriors.
Over the subsequent five seasons, Tuilagi developed into an established first-grade forward. After making 27 appearances for the Wests Tigers, he spent the 2023 season with the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles, where he added 17 games to his mantle. A subsequent move to the Parramatta Eels provided further opportunities to showcase his destructive ball-running and aggressive defensive perimeter work.
To date, the 27-year-old forward has accumulated 88 NRL appearances and crossed for 12 tries across his stints with the Tigers, Sea Eagles, and Eels. His robust domestic form also earned him international recognition, representing Samoa on four occasions, including during their memorable 2022 Rugby League World Cup campaign.
Strategic Reinforcement for Melbourne’s Pack
For Melbourne Storm Football Director Frank Ponissi, re-signing Tuilagi represents a strategic addition to the forward pack. The club has consistently excelled at identifying players who understand the internal culture and integrating them seamlessly back into the system.
“We’re delighted to have Kelma returning to Melbourne Storm and Victoria in 2027,” Ponissi said in an official statement. “Kelma has a strong connection to our Club. He was part of our 2020 Premiership-winning squad and came through the Victorian rugby league system, so it’s fantastic to bring him back after he’s established himself as an NRL player. He’s a powerful, athletic forward who has continued to develop over the past few seasons, and he will add valuable physicality to our group.”
Transition Period Ahead at Parramatta
With incoming recruit Jaydn Su’A arriving at Parramatta to bolster the back row alongside Jack Williams and emerging talent Kitione Kautoga, Tuilagi’s departure allows the Eels to reshape their roster while giving the Samoan international clarity regarding his future.
Tuilagi will fulfill his contract obligations with Parramatta before reporting to Melbourne for 2027 preseason training, where he will finally aim to pull on the purple jersey for his official club debut.
