Danielle Green, a Purple Heart recipient, Iraq War veteran, and former Notre Dame women’s basketball player, was awarded the prestigious Pat Tillman Award for Service at the ESPYs. Green’s inspiring journey from athlete to soldier to veterans’ advocate embodies the spirit of resilience, sacrifice, and dedication to helping others.

From the Court to the Battlefield

Green’s story is one of perseverance and courage. As a standout guard for Notre Dame’s women’s basketball team from 1995 to 2000, she showcased her leadership and determination on the court. However, her desire to serve her country led her to enlist in the U.S. Army after graduation.

While serving as a specialist in Iraq in 2004, Green’s life changed forever when she was severely injured in a rocket-propelled grenade attack. She lost her left arm in the explosion but never lost her fighting spirit.

A Life of Service Beyond the Military

Despite the life-altering injury, Green refused to let adversity define her. She turned her focus toward helping fellow veterans, earning a master’s degree in counseling and dedicating her career to assisting those who have served. Currently employed in South Bend, Indiana, as a veterans’ counselor, she provides critical support to those transitioning back to civilian life.

An Award That Honors True Service

The Pat Tillman Award for Service, named after the former NFL player-turned-Army Ranger, recognizes individuals who exemplify selflessness, leadership, and commitment to others. Green’s unwavering dedication to veterans and her ability to inspire through her personal journey make her a deserving recipient of this honor.

Her story continues to be a beacon of hope, proving that even in the face of adversity, one can rise, serve, and make a lasting impact.
