Big 12 Tournament Recap: UCF Eliminates BYU

Kaitlin Peterson poured in 25 of her game-high 35 points in the second half, propelling UCF to eliminate BYU from the Big 12 Women’s Championship tournament on Wednesday afternoon in Kansas City, Mo.

BYU entered the fourth quarter with a slim one-point lead but struggled to stop Peterson, who sealed the victory by scoring 13 points in the final 10 minutes.

After the Cougars edged ahead 56-55 with 40 seconds left in the third quarter, Peterson took charge. She knocked down a 3-pointer, sank two free throws to open the fourth, buried another triple, and forced a Cougars timeout with a steal and layup that extended UCF’s lead to 66-57 with 8:02 remaining.

The 13th-seeded Knights (12-17, 4-14) will now face Kansas State on Thursday. The fourth-seeded Wildcats (25-6, 13-5) had a first-round bye. Kansas State previously defeated UCF 97-67 on Feb. 15.

Colorado 66, Houston 58

Lior Garzon tallied 21 points as ninth-seeded Colorado comfortably defeated 16th-seeded Houston in Kansas City, Mo.

Jade Masogayo contributed 14 points for Colorado (19-11), which moves on to face eighth-seeded Arizona on Thursday. The Buffaloes shot 44.9 percent from the field while dominating the glass with a 48-22 rebounding advantage.

Laila Blair paced Houston (5-25, 1-17) with 15 points. Gigi Cooke added 13, Eylia Love scored 11, and Leilani Augmon chipped in 10 as the Cougars closed out their season with 13 straight losses.
