Roosters Dismiss Links to Penrith Superstar
The Sydney Roosters have reportedly dismissed speculation linking them with a potential move for Penrith Panthers superstar Nathan Cleary, insisting their recruitment strategy remains focused on developing talent from within their existing squad.
Following comments from club legend Brad Fittler suggesting Cleary could become a realistic recruitment target, speculation emerged about whether the Bondi-based club would attempt to secure the services of one of the NRL’s most influential players.
However, the Roosters’ powerbrokers have reportedly moved quickly to shut down suggestions that they are preparing an approach for the representative halfback.
According to Code Sports journalist Dean Ritchie, the club has no intention of pursuing the Cleary situation and would rather place its confidence in the players already coming through its development system.
Club Prefers Developing Its Own Talent
Ritchie revealed that the Roosters remain committed to promoting from within rather than entering the race for an established superstar.
“Club powerbrokers have been quick to terminate talk about Cleary’s mooted shift to Bondi, preferring to promote from within,” Ritchie wrote via Code Sports.
The reported position represents a significant clarification following the speculation surrounding Cleary’s potential availability and the Roosters’ salary cap situation.
While the club has traditionally demonstrated a willingness to recruit established representative players, its latest stance suggests there is considerable confidence in the next generation of talent.
Rather than spending heavily to bring another marquee playmaker to the club, the Roosters appear prepared to give their emerging players an opportunity to establish themselves at NRL level.
Toby Rodwell Identified as Walker’s Potential Replacement
One of the biggest reasons behind the Roosters’ reported decision is their belief in young halfback Toby Rodwell.
With Sam Walker potentially departing the club next season, despite remaining contracted until the end of 2027, the Roosters are reportedly confident Rodwell can eventually take responsibility for the number seven jersey.
“The Roosters have enormous faith that young Toby Rodwell will step into the halfback role when Walker leaves, which is likely to be next season, even though he is still under contract at the Roosters until the end of 2027,” Ritchie reported.
The development could have significant implications for the club’s future recruitment plans.
Replacing a player of Walker’s quality will not be an easy assignment, particularly given the importance of the halfback position in modern rugby league.
However, the Roosters’ confidence in Rodwell suggests they believe the young playmaker has the potential to become an important part of their long-term plans.
Cleary Speculation Takes a Different Turn
For now, the possibility of Cleary moving to Bondi appears to have lost momentum following the reported clarification from the Roosters.
Although Fittler’s comments generated considerable discussion, the club’s preference appears to be backing its emerging talent rather than pursuing another blockbuster signing.
Attention will now turn to Walker’s future and whether Rodwell can eventually convince the Roosters that he is the right man to lead their attack.
