Panthers Star Misses Training
Nathan Cleary’s absence from parts of Penrith’s preparations has sparked plenty of discussion among Panthers supporters, but the latest information points to an injury concern rather than the emotional story circulating online.
The Panthers confirmed that their star halfback sustained a stress-related bone issue in his foot during Penrith’s qualifying-final victory over the Sydney Roosters. The club said Cleary would continue to be assessed and monitored by the medical team as he works toward the preliminary final.
Overuse Behind the Problem
Ivan Cleary has since provided further insight into the injury, explaining that the problem is related to overuse.
Nathan carries an enormous workload for Penrith, contributing heavily through his kicking game, running and general involvement during matches. His father indicated that those demands had contributed to the foot problem and that his preparation would therefore need to change.
Rather than continuing with his normal physical workload, Cleary is expected to place greater emphasis on mental preparation while reducing the amount of stress placed on his injured foot.
Pain Became Noticeable
The concern became particularly visible during the closing stages of Penrith’s victory over the Roosters.
Cleary managed to kick a field goal during the match but subsequently experienced significant discomfort. He did not take the final conversion attempt, with Dylan Edwards stepping in as a precaution.
The Panthers later confirmed that scans had identified the stress-related bone issue, although the club did not initially specify whether the problem should be classified as a stress reaction or a stress fracture.
Mary Fowler’s Recovery
Meanwhile, Cleary’s partner, Mary Fowler, has also been dealing with an injury of her own.
The Manchester City midfielder has been recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered in April. City head coach Andrée Jeglertz recently revealed that Fowler had returned to modified training with the team and was progressing positively.
Jeglertz said Fowler was not yet ready to return to competitive action but described her as being on the right path and approaching the final stages of her rehabilitation.
No Confirmation of Viral Claim
Despite social-media claims suggesting that Cleary became emotional after learning of Fowler’s condition and immediately wanted to fly to England, recent credible reports do not establish that this was the reason for his training absence.
Current reporting instead consistently identifies Cleary’s foot problem and the need to manage his physical workload as the explanation for his modified preparation.
Finals Pressure Builds
The timing of the injury has naturally increased attention around Penrith, with the Panthers entering the crucial stages of the NRL finals.
Cleary’s ability to train normally is particularly important given the physical demands placed on a halfback during finals football. However, Penrith’s week off following the qualifying-final victory provides additional time for the club’s medical staff to monitor his condition and manage his recovery.
Ivan Cleary has indicated that mental rehearsal will become an increasingly important part of Nathan’s preparation while he limits physical activity.
Panthers Await Cleary Update
For now, Penrith supporters will be watching closely for further medical updates.
Cleary remains central to the Panthers’ finals campaign, but the club is clearly taking his foot issue seriously. His recovery will determine how much physical preparation he can complete before the preliminary final.
At the same time, Fowler’s return to modified training represents a positive development in her own rehabilitation. While the emotional story circulating online has attracted considerable attention, the confirmed information paints a different picture: both athletes are currently navigating their respective injury recoveries, with their sporting commitments remaining a major
