PERTH – The Perth Bears’ inaugural roster continues to take formidable shape following reports that Parramatta Eels utility back Sean Russell has agreed to a long-term future with the NRL’s newest expansion franchise.
According to The Daily Telegraph, Russell is set to join the Bears on a four-year contract, a deal that will see him relocate to Western Australia through the end of the 2030 season. The move represents a significant coup for Perth, as they managed to pry the versatile 22-year-old away from Parramatta despite the Eels’ reported efforts to retain him.
Russell, a reliable fixture in the Eels’ 2025 campaign with 20 appearances, brings much-needed utility value to the Bears. His ability to cover multiple positions across the back-line makes him a cornerstone signing alongside other confirmed recruits, including Toby Sexton, Harry Newman, and Liam Henry.
Earlier this week, Russell’s manager, Gavin Orr, hinted that his client had “decisions to make” amid heavy interest. It appears the lure of a fresh start and the stability of a four-year term in Perth was the deciding factor.
Eels Eye Brian Kelly as Replacement
While the loss of Russell is a blow to the Eels’ depth, the club is already moving to fill the void. Parramatta remains locked in negotiations with the Gold Coast Titans to secure the services of veteran centre Brian Kelly ahead of the 2026 season.
Kelly, who has been a pillar of the Titans’ back-line since 2019, is currently contracted for another 12 months. However, a move to Sydney would provide the Eels with a proven strike weapon. With 143 NRL matches and 51 tries to his name, Kelly’s experience would be a vital asset for an Eels side looking to reshuffle their outside back rotation.
As the Perth Bears continue to raid the rosters of established clubs, the Eels find themselves in a race against time to ensure their 2026 squad remains competitive in an increasingly aggressive player market.
