The US president and his team have increased pressure as it emerged that panicked European leaders were calling an emergency conference in Paris in response to his deputy JD Vance’s “brilliant” attack on Western allies, saying European leaders would not be part of any Ukraine peace talks. US Special Presidential Envoy for Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg, 80, has encouraged Europe to join the conversation about the Ukraine-Russia conflict, but has made it clear that they would not have a final say in any resolution.
“That is not going to happen,” he said at the Munich Security Conference. I would also advise my European friends to participate in the discussion by offering specific ideas, plans, and ways to increase [defense] spending rather than by whining about whether or not they may be at the table.
A meeting in Paris, scheduled for tomorrow.
According to French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, who told France Inter radio on Sunday. Five European diplomats said the countries that will be represented at the meeting include France, Britain, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain, and Denmark.
The most recent events followed US Vice-President Mr. Vance’s furious criticism of European countries, including the UK, during the same meeting.
He claimed that Europe was in a “crisis” that was “one of our own making” and used his participation at the Munich Security Conference to criticize Europeans for their immigration policies and restrictions on free expression.
Colleagues in the US administration have also been downplaying the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO; Mr. Trump called Mr. Vance’s remarks in Munich “brilliant.”
