The historic sands of Daytona International Speedway once again belonged to Eli Tomac. In a masterclass of grit and veteran poise, Tomac secured his eighth career Supercross victory at the iconic venue, solidifying his status as the most dominant force in Daytona history. With this win, Tomac becomes the only rider in the 2026 SuperMotocross season to claim multiple victories, adding Daytona to his previous triumphs in Anaheim, San Diego, and Seattle.

The Duel in the Dirt

The feature race began with Hunter Lawrence grabbing the holeshot, only to be overtaken quickly by Ken Roczen on the opening lap. Tomac, meanwhile, started systematically picking his way through the pack. After crossing the stripe in fourth on Lap 1, he climbed to third by Lap 2. The pivotal moment arrived on Lap 7, when Tomac executed a brilliant double-pass on both Lawrence and Roczen to seize a lead he would never relinquish.

Despite Tomac’s control, the closing stages were far from a cakewalk. Hunter Lawrence found a second wind in the final five minutes, clocking the fastest laps of the race. While Lawrence ultimately fell 1.3 seconds short of the win, his ability to pressure Tomac on a track where the veteran usually goes unchallenged served as a significant moral victory for the young title contender.

Championship Implications

The victory has massive ramifications for the 2026 title chase. Tomac has been the class of the field, with his only significant blemish being a 12th-place finish in Glendale following a disastrous Turn 1 crash. That single incident cost him 12 points, but his consistency elsewhere has allowed him to claw back into striking distance. Following the Daytona results, Tomac has closed the gap to Hunter Lawrence to a single point.

Ken Roczen, who led the first five laps before losing touch with the lead duo, finished a lonely third. More than ten seconds back from Lawrence, Roczen nonetheless secured his fifth podium of the season, keeping his championship hopes mathematically alive as the series heads into the heart of the schedule.

Pivot to Indianapolis

The pressure now shifts to Lucas Oil Stadium for next week’s Indianapolis Supercross. The event marks the second Triple Crown of the 2026 season—a format that has previously haunted Tomac. A chaotic outing at the Houston Triple Crown earlier this year resulted in a disappointing fourth-place finish, preventing him from taking the red plate sooner. As the series moves to Indiana, the one-point gap between Lawrence and Tomac guarantees a high-tension showdown in the three-main-event format.
