Sidelined at the Opener

Four-time 450MX Champion Eli Tomac is forced to the sidelines following a dramatic first-moto crash at the season-opening Fox Raceway National. The veteran Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider will miss the upcoming rounds of the championship, including the highly anticipated Hangtown National, leaving a significant void at the front of the starting gate.

The Medical Verdict

The incident unfolded during the opening lap of Moto 1 when Tomac heavily tangled with another rider, bringing an abrupt and painful end to his afternoon. After being heavily restricted in a neck brace and carted off the track by medical staff, the racing icon underwent rigorous evaluations earlier this week. Advanced medical imaging ultimately delivered a complex diagnosis: a hyperextended anterior longitudinal ligament alongside a partial tear of the left sternocleidomastoid muscle in his neck.

Fortunately for Tomac and his team, specialists have determined that the severe trauma will not require surgical intervention. However, the path forward demands strict adherence to rest and rehabilitation, forcing the championship contender into an indefinite period of recovery.

Disappointment for the KTM Campaign

This early setback proves exceptionally bittersweet for Tomac, who was eager to showcase his talent during his first full outdoor campaign aboard the Austrian machinery. Having transitioned to the Red Bull KTM program, the star had spent months building up immense momentum and confidence ahead of the summer schedule.

Expressing his deep frustration, Tomac admitted that he was incredibly bummed to sustain an injury so early in the first round. He noted that since late last year, he could not wait to unleash the KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition in the outdoor setting, praising its engine package as unreal. He lamented that a routine racing incident had thrown a major dampener on his season, but affirmed he would follow medical orders with every intention of returning later this year.

An Uncertain Road Ahead

As the rest of the field prepares for the grueling summer calendar, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing has refrained from establishing a definitive timeline for their rider’s return to the SuperMotocross World Championship series. The organization reiterated that the immediate goal is ensuring Tomac is fully fit and capable of performing at a premium level before he throws a leg back over the bike. For now, motocross fans worldwide must wait for further medical updates, hoping to see the legendary “ET3” back behind the gate before the 2026 season concludes.
