One of South Carolina’s top high school football prospects has officially made his college decision—and it’s sending waves through the recruiting landscape. Tamarion Watkins, a highly-touted safety from Northwestern High School in Rock Hill, announced on Monday that he will be committing to Texas A&M University. The decision came during a heartfelt ceremony held at his high school, where Watkins shared the moment with family, friends, teammates, and coaches.
Watkins, entering his senior season, has been on the radar of several top-tier college football programs across the country. His blend of size, speed, and football IQ made him one of the most coveted defensive recruits in the Southeast. Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 190 pounds, Watkins is known for his ball-hawking ability in the secondary, his aggressive tackling style, and his leadership on and off the field. College scouts have frequently praised his versatility, noting that he can play both safety positions as well as slide into nickel coverage when needed.
Over the past several months, Watkins had narrowed his list of potential destinations to four schools: Georgia, South Carolina, Miami, and Texas A&M. Each program made a strong push for his commitment, offering not only scholarship opportunities but the chance to play early and develop under top defensive coaches. In the end, however, it was the Texas A&M Aggies who won the recruiting battle.
“I prayed about it, talked with my family, and just followed my heart,” Watkins said during his announcement. “Texas A&M felt like home to me. The coaching staff made me feel like I was a priority from day one, and I believe in what they’re building there. I’m excited to be part of something special.”
For South Carolina fans, Watkins’ decision is a tough pill to swallow. Many had hoped that the local standout would choose to stay in-state and play for the Gamecocks. South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer and his staff were heavily involved in Watkins’ recruitment, hosting him on multiple visits and presenting a clear path to early playing time. Despite their efforts, Watkins ultimately decided that his future lies in College Station, not Columbia.
Texas A&M continues to solidify its reputation as one of the nation’s elite recruiting programs. Under head coach Mike Elko, the Aggies have prioritized defensive talent, and Watkins is expected to be a key part of their plans for the future. His commitment adds to an already impressive 2025 recruiting class for Texas A&M, which has steadily climbed the national rankings.
As for Watkins, he will now turn his attention to finishing his senior year at Northwestern High School, where expectations are high for the upcoming season. With his college decision behind him, he plans to focus fully on helping his team compete for a state championship.
“I’m locked in now,” Watkins said. “I’m going to give everything I have to Northwestern this year, and then I’ll be ready to go to Texas A&M and get to work.”
For Texas A&M, Watkins’ commitment is another major win on the recruiting trail. For South Carolina, it’s back to the drawing board.
