The Manly Sea Eagles are already plotting a significant roster overhaul for 2027, with NSW Blues utility Connor Watson emerging as a primary target. While the club enjoys a resurgence on the field, the front office is busy navigating a complex coaching search and the delicate long-term future of club legend Jake Trbojevic.

Recruitment Targets: The Watson Factor

Manly Sea Eagles

Manly has identified Watson as a versatile solution for their middle rotation. Currently contracted to the Sydney Roosters until the end of next year, Watson is viewed as a high-impact option at lock or hooker. While the Roosters aren’t actively shopping the “supersub,” sources indicate the Bondi club would likely grant an early release if Watson secured a lucrative long-term deal elsewhere. With interest also brewing from the Bears and the PNG expansion project, Manly will need to move decisively to secure the representative star.

The Coaching Carousel: Arthur vs. Foran

The battle for the clipboard at Brookvale has become a two-horse race. Interim coach Kieran Foran made an emphatic opening statement with a 52-18 demolition of the Dolphins on Thursday night. However, looming large is Brad Arthur, who is currently revitalizing Leeds in the Super League.

Arthur received a significant boost this week via a “glowing endorsement” from Parramatta halfback Mitchell Moses. Having guided the Eels to a Grand Final in 2022 and currently sitting atop the English ladder, Arthur’s veteran credentials contrast sharply with the emotional momentum behind Foran. Other names in the mix include Matt Ballin and Michael Ennis, though Arthur remains the most decorated candidate available.

Trbojevic’s Clouded Future

Central to Manly’s recruitment strategy is the uncertain tenure of Jake Trbojevic. The former NSW captain silenced critics with a vintage performance against the Dolphins—tallying 31 tackles and 81 metres—but concerns regarding his concussion history and overall longevity persist. With younger forwards like Haumole Olakau’atu and Taniela Paseka now providing the bulk of the team’s yardage, the Sea Eagles are forced to weigh Trbojevic’s status as a local icon against the need for a more mobile, modern engine room.

The Path Ahead

Foran has a golden opportunity to cement his position over the next month. With a favorable schedule featuring the Dragons, Cowboys, and Eels, a winning streak could make it nearly impossible for the board to look elsewhere. Yet, with Arthur’s stock rising in the UK and Watson’s signature potentially on the table, the Sea Eagles find themselves at a pivotal crossroads that will define the club for the next decade.
