A Final Tribute
Hundreds of mourners gathered at Woronora Memorial Park on Monday to celebrate the extraordinary life and career of rugby league Immortal Graeme Langlands, with former teammates, opponents, officials, players and supporters joining his family to say a final farewell.
Langlands, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, was remembered not simply for his achievements but for the lasting influence he had on generations of rugby league players and fans.
Jerseys on His Casket
Langlands’ St George and Australian jerseys were placed on his casket as a fitting tribute to the clubs and country he represented with distinction throughout his career.
When his family was asked whether they wanted anything else included, their response reflected the character and folklore surrounding the legendary fullback.
They joked that nothing else was necessary “unless you can find those white boots”.
The Famous White Boots
The reference brought back memories of one of rugby league’s most iconic pieces of sporting folklore.
Former St George teammate Steve Edge told the packed gathering that Langlands had ultimately left the famous white boots hanging from the crossbar of a goal post in Huddersfield.
The boots became synonymous with Langlands after he famously wore them during his career, adding another memorable chapter to the story of a player whose career was filled with extraordinary moments.
Remembering a Champion
Among those paying tribute was Dragons great Bob McCarthy, who reflected on Langlands’ difficult experience in the 1975 grand final against Eastern Suburbs.
Langlands was widely considered to have endured one of the worst performances of his career that afternoon, after a painkilling injection into his foot affected a nerve. St George subsequently suffered a heavy 38-0 defeat.
Yet McCarthy emphasized that even that painful chapter could not diminish Langlands’ standing in the game.
Everyone still recognized afterward that he was a great player, reinforcing the belief that one difficult afternoon could never define a career of such magnitude.
A Career Beyond One Match
That sentiment was echoed throughout Monday’s service, as speaker after speaker highlighted Langlands’ remarkable consistency, leadership and contribution to rugby league.
His legacy stretched far beyond statistics and premiership memories. He represented St George and Australia at the highest level and became a figure whose name remains deeply connected with the golden era of the sport.
His elevation to Immortal status cemented his place among rugby league’s most influential figures.
Rugby League Pays Its Respects
The gathering reflected the breadth of Langlands’ impact. The entire St George Illawarra Dragons playing squad and coaching staff attended, alongside NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg and numerous former teammates and opponents.
Fans also turned out in large numbers, demonstrating the affection that remained for a player who had left an indelible mark on the game.
A Lasting Legacy
For those who knew Langlands personally and those who admired him from afar, the funeral was an opportunity to celebrate rather than simply mourn.
The stories shared throughout the service captured the respect surrounding his name, while the presence of rugby league royalty underlined the extraordinary standing he achieved.
Graeme Langlands leaves behind a legacy that extends well beyond his playing days. From St George’s historic teams to the Australian jersey and ultimately the Immortals honour, his contribution to rugby league will continue to be remembered.
