A Decade Later, The Rivalry Returns
Tennis fans are set for a special reunion as Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray prepare to share the court once again, more than a decade after their last competitive meeting.
The two former world No. 1s will be reunited at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Manacor, Mallorca, as part of celebrations marking the academy’s 10th anniversary.
The exhibition event, known as the Rafa Nadal Academy Slam, is scheduled for October 3 and will bring together two of the defining players of their generation.
Nadal Returns to the Court
The occasion carries additional significance because it marks Nadal’s return to playing in front of a crowd since his retirement from professional tennis.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion retired from professional competition in November 2024 following the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga. His return to the court in Manacor will therefore give fans another opportunity to see one of tennis’s most celebrated champions with a racket in his hand.
The event will take place at the academy Nadal founded in 2016, making the reunion particularly fitting.
Murray Takes Charge of Team Murray
Murray has been confirmed as the captain of Team Murray, which will face Team Rafa during the anniversary celebrations.
Nadal personally invited his former rival to return to Mallorca in a video shared by the academy. The Spaniard joked about Murray’s recent practice and suggested that they bring together friends for a team competition.
Murray accepted the invitation, setting the stage for another meeting between two players who shared some memorable battles throughout their careers.
Their Last Meeting
Nadal and Murray’s most recent competitive encounter came in the semifinals of the 2016 Mutua Madrid Open.
More than 10 years later, their reunion will take place in a completely different environment. Rather than competing for a place in a tournament final, the pair will lead opposing teams as part of a celebration of the academy’s first decade.
Their previous rivalry included numerous encounters at major tournaments, making their return to the court a nostalgic moment for tennis followers.
A Celebration of Ten Years
The Rafa Nadal Academy opened in Manacor in 2016 and has since expanded its international presence while developing young players through a combination of tennis training, education and personal development.
The 10th-anniversary event is designed to celebrate that history, with exhibitions, activities and entertainment scheduled throughout the day.
Former world No. 1 Murray has also previously visited the academy, first for training in 2016 and later to compete at the Rafa Nadal Open in 2019.
A Special Tennis Reunion
With Nadal and Murray preparing to share the court again, the October event promises to connect the present with one of the most memorable eras in men’s tennis.
For fans who watched their battles during their professional careers, seeing them together again—this time at Nadal’s own academy—will offer a rare opportunity to revisit a rivalry that helped define a generation.
