NRL veteran Marty Taupau has spoken publicly for the first time about the circumstances that led to his controversial mid-season departure from the Brisbane Broncos — a decision that ultimately cost him the chance to be part of their historic premiership triumph.

Taupau, who left the club in May 2025, was released following an incident in which he ‘liked’ a social media post critical of head coach Michael Maguire’s training methods. The post, shared by former NRL player Elijah Taylor, detailed Taylor’s experiences of feeling burnt out during his time under Maguire at the Wests Tigers.

At the time, Maguire’s intense and uncompromising coaching style had drawn mixed reactions within the Broncos camp, with reports suggesting some players had asked the coach to ease his approach. However, Maguire’s methods would ultimately be vindicated, guiding Brisbane to their first NRL premiership in 19 years.

Speaking on The Chad Townsend Show, the 34-year-old forward described the incident as an “innocent mistake” that spiraled beyond his intentions. “It was just a like — nothing more,” Taupau said. “I didn’t mean any harm or disrespect to anyone at the club. But I understand how it was perceived, and that’s on me.”

Taupau admitted that watching his former teammates lift the trophy was bittersweet. “I was genuinely happy for the boys — they earned it,” he said. “But of course, it hurt not being part of that moment.”

Since leaving the NRL, Taupau has focused on mentoring younger players and building life beyond football. Reflecting on the episode, he said it was a reminder of the power and pitfalls of social media. “One click can change everything,” he noted. “It taught me that perception in this game can matter just as much as intention.”

Taupau’s story stands as a cautionary tale in an era where online actions can have real-world consequences.
