Retired NRL veteran Martin Taupau has opened up about the incident that led to his abrupt departure from the Brisbane Broncos earlier this year, revealing the fallout from what he described as an “innocent mistake.”

Taupau, a dual international with more than 250 NRL appearances across four clubs, was released by the Broncos on May 17, 2025, after liking an Instagram post that criticised the club’s training methods under head coach Michael Maguire. The social media activity quickly drew attention within the club, prompting internal discussions and ultimately leading to his exit midway through the season.

Speaking on The Chad Townsend Show, the 34-year-old admitted he hadn’t fully realised the impact his online engagement would have. “It was a simple like — I didn’t think much of it at the time,” Taupau said. “But I understand how it was perceived, and I take full responsibility for that. It was never meant to disrespect the club or the coaching staff.”

Taupau reflected on his short stint in Brisbane, saying he holds no ill feelings toward the Broncos or Maguire, describing his departure as a difficult but valuable learning experience. “I loved my time at the Broncos,” he added. “I got to work with great teammates and coaches. It just ended in a way I didn’t expect.”

Since leaving the NRL, Taupau has shifted his focus toward mentoring young players and exploring opportunities off the field. The veteran forward said the incident has reminded him of the scrutiny professional athletes face in the digital age.

“It only takes one click to change everything,” he said. “I’ve learned to be more mindful — because perception matters just as much as intention.”

Taupau’s story serves as a timely reminder of how social media can quickly influence careers, even for the game’s most experienced players.
