In his most recent executive order pertaining to DOGE, President Donald Trump suspended credit card use for government employees for the next 30 days.
The order, which was issued behind closed doors on Wednesday, prohibits all federal employees from using their credit cards unless they are engaged in “disaster relief” or “critical services,” as determined by their agency head. Currently, there are roughly 4.6 million active credit cards owned by the US government.
Employees from using their credit cards unless they are engaged in “disaster relief” or “critical services,” as determined by their agency head.
Currently, there are roughly 4.6 million active credit cards owned by the US government.
DOGE, citing statistics from the General Services Administration, estimated that approximately $40 billion, or 90 million unique transactions, were stolen in 2024.
The DOGE account pointed up the credit card expenditure in a message to X on February 18 and said that the Elon Musk-led company would “simplify the program and reduce admin costs. “Additionally, the message stated, “[W]e will report back in 1 week.”
Trump’s most recent DOGE executive order also requires government employees to provide justification for their travel expenditures.
“Create a technological system within each agency that centrally records approval for federally funded travel for conferences and other non-essential purposes,” the mandate directs the agency heads. A “centralized technological system within the agency to seamlessly record every payment” made to any government contract, grant, or loan is another directive given to agency heads and their “DOGE team lead.”
According to the order, each payment must have a system-based justification.
Additionally, agency heads and their DOGE partners were directed to review all existing grants and contracts to ensure they are still needed.
Additionally, the decree initiates the process of selling any government property that isn’t being used.
This was Trump’s second executive order pertaining to DOGE.
After convening his first Cabinet meeting with DOGE head Musk in tow, he took this action behind closed doors on Wednesday.
Trump promised to ‘throw out’ any Cabinet members who didn’t appreciate Musk during the meeting.
Musk sent out an email to all federal employees asking them to specify, “What did you do last week?” The White House reacted angrily to a CNN article on Tuesday that said there was divergence between some Cabinet secretaries and Musk’s aim.
At first, Musk threatened to fire those who didn’t reply.
Since the majority of their portfolios would be classified, some agency chiefs told employees not to respond. ‘A number of agencies weren’t given a heads up, which caused some issues,’ even a senior White House insider said CNN, declining to provide their identity.

Press secretary Karoline Leavitt maintained that “nobody was caught off guard” during Tuesday’s briefing.
“Did the Cabinet secretaries say that or did anonymous sources say that?” Then, she questioned Jeff Zeleny of CNN.
“There will be any ‘give and take’ at the Cabinet meeting,” Zeleny responded, adding that Cabinet secretaries and others claimed they were unaware that the Musk email was being sent.
“Is the president or Elon Musk amenable to any kind of discussion regarding who is truly in charge of these workers’ chain of command?” Zeleny inquired.
Leavitt stated that she disagreed with the question’s premise.
That is not what the Cabinet secretaries have stated. “I am aware that many of you in this room have been informed of that by anonymous sources, most likely career bureaucrats,” she said.
The president respects the Cabinet secretaries’ decisions to instruct their staff not to reply to that email because they did so in the interest of national security and they don’t want to, obviously, risk confidential information, Leavitt continued. “But as I said at the beginning of this press conference, everyone is working as one team.” “That’s just common sense.”
