Gabby Thomas, Sha’Carri Richardson, and Tara Davis-Woodhall Become Founding Owners of the ATHLOS Track and Field League
In a bold step toward athlete empowerment and the evolution of professional track and field, Olympic stars Gabby Thomas, Sha’Carri Richardson, and Tara Davis-Woodhall have officially joined the ownership group of the ATHLOS Track and Field League. The three athletes will serve as founding advisor-owners, bringing their unique experience and vision to shape the future of the sport.
ATHLOS was launched in 2024 by Alexis Ohanian—co-founder of Reddit and husband of tennis legend Serena Williams—as an all-women’s track and field competition. Now, the league is preparing for a major expansion. After hosting a successful inaugural event, ATHLOS is set to return to New York City in 2025 and will evolve into a fully-fledged, team-based league format.
Unlike traditional track meets that focus solely on individual achievements, ATHLOS is introducing a team competition model. This innovative approach is designed to deepen fan engagement and bring a fresh layer of excitement to the sport. “ATHLOS is shifting gears, moving from a solo spotlight to team-centered showdowns where participating athletes will compete for teams, not just times. It’s still blazing fast, but with teams to cheer for,” the league’s website explains.
What sets ATHLOS apart from other track and field platforms is its groundbreaking financial structure. Each event will offer a $60,000 prize to the winner—double the amount top athletes typically earn for an entire season. Moreover, 10% of all event revenue will be distributed back to the athletes, ensuring they are fairly compensated for their contributions on and off the track. Ohanian explained the motivation behind this model, saying, “I asked these women, ‘What is your top prize at the end of a season for winning?’ And they said $30,000. And I said, ‘Great, I’m going to double it for one single race.’”
For now, Richardson, Thomas, and Davis-Woodhall will lend their insights during the development phase, working closely with ATHLOS leadership to craft a league that prioritizes athletes’ needs. “Gabby, Sha’Carri, and Tara represent a new generation of athletes who have put this sport on their shoulders and deserve to be compensated for being the standard-bearers,” Ohanian said.
Kayla Green, Chief Media Officer at ATHLOS, emphasized the importance of centering athletes in every decision: “We’re really at that stage of taking those steps to make sure that as we’re building this vision and the details around the vision, that we’re doing it with the athletes at the center.”
With world-class talent and progressive leadership at the helm, ATHLOS is poised to redefine the track and field landscape.
