COLLEGE STATION, Texas — It’s not every day that a standout high school athlete successfully balances two sports—and even more rare when they excel in both. For Colton Chmelar of A&M Consolidated High School, that balance has defined his high school athletic career. But now, as graduation nears, Chmelar is closing one chapter and turning the page to another. After a stellar run in soccer, he’s officially shifting his focus to football as he prepares to join the Texas A&M Aggies.
Chmelar, one of the most decorated athletes to come through the A&M Consolidated soccer program, made it official in December when he signed his letter of intent to join Texas A&M as a preferred walk-on. The decision had been in the works since last summer, but now, with high school coming to an end, the transition is fully underway.
Though football will be his focus moving forward, Chmelar’s soccer career ended on a high note. He helped lead the Tigers to a deep playoff run this season, reaching the regional finals. To cap it all off, he was invited to participate in the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches All-Star game this past weekend—where he didn’t just play, but also took home MVP honors.
“Mentally, I was not prepared to play another game,” Chmelar admitted with a laugh. “I thought, alright, I’m done with soccer—time to focus on football. I’ve been working on my kicking and making sure I’m ready. But then I got the message that I made the All-Star team, and I was like, ‘Oh sweet, one more soccer game.’ And actually, it was pretty cool.”
That one final game was a fitting farewell to a sport he’s loved since he was just three years old. Chmelar’s journey in soccer spans well over a decade, and his contributions to the Consol program won’t soon be forgotten. Yet despite his soccer pedigree, his talents on the football field are equally impressive.
As a kicker for the Tigers football team, Chmelar was as reliable as they come. In his junior season, he went a perfect 51-for-51 on point-after attempts (PATs). His longest field goal during a game? A booming 51-yarder—showcasing both his leg strength and consistency, key qualities that will serve him well at the collegiate level.
Chmelar first picked up football in the 7th grade, and over the years, it’s become a true passion alongside soccer. Now, with his high school days winding down, he’s turning all of his attention to mastering his craft as a kicker.
“It’s time to focus,” he said. “I want to make sure I’m ready for this next step.”
That next step brings him just down the road to Kyle Field, where he’ll wear maroon and white and represent Texas A&M. While the pitch may be behind him, the future looks bright for Chmelar on the gridiron.
