Could the Boston Bruins Trade Their Top 10 First-Round Pick?

For the first time in general manager Don Sweeney’s tenure, the Boston Bruins find themselves holding a Top 10 pick in the NHL Entry Draft. With the No. 7 overall selection, the Bruins are poised for their highest draft pick since they selected Tyler Seguin at No. 2 in 2010. However, just because they have the pick doesn’t mean they’ll keep it.

During Marco Sturm’s introductory press conference on Tuesday, Sweeney made it clear that the Bruins’ front office is keeping all options open, including the possibility of trading the pick.

“We’ve been an aggressive organization, whether or not you want to point out fault in regard to trying to win and accomplish the ultimate goal. That’s what we’re here for,” Sweeney said. “So we will use the draft capital and try and improve our hockey club this year and moving forward in every capacity possible. It might be making the selection, but it won’t mean that we aren’t having conversations that say, ‘How do we improve our hockey club today and moving forward.’”

This statement leaves the door wide open for a trade. While the Bruins could use the No. 7 pick to select a high-caliber prospect, they may also look to leverage it in a deal to bolster their roster in other areas.

Thanks to a successful trade deadline that saw Sweeney stockpile assets, the Bruins have an enviable position in the draft. In addition to their first-round pick this year, they also have an extra second-round pick, an additional first-round pick in 2026, and potentially another first-rounder in either 2027 or 2028. This gives the Bruins plenty of flexibility when it comes to making moves.

  • 1st round (BOS)
  • 2nd round (BOS)

With a stockpile of draft picks and a willingness to make moves to improve the team, the Bruins’ decision regarding their Top 10 selection will be a critical one. Whether they keep the pick or trade it for immediate help, one thing is clear: Boston is in a position to shape its future, both today and in the years to come.
