Germany’s top tennis star Alexander Zverev is set to headline the field at the 2025 Bitpanda Hamburg Open, accepting a wild card into the ATP 500 event. Returning to a tournament that holds fond memories, the 28-year-old will be looking to recapture the title he won in 2023 and improve on last year’s runner-up finish. Zverev enters Hamburg with a solid 24-9 win-loss record this season, and recently claimed his first title of the year at the ATP 500 in Munich.
Zverev begins his Hamburg campaign against a qualifier and could meet sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in what promises to be a highly anticipated quarter-final clash. Also in Zverev’s half of the draw is third seed Andrey Rublev, the 2020 Hamburg champion. Rublev, however, has struggled to find consistency this year, currently holding an 11-11 record. He will look to bounce back from an early exit in Rome at the hands of Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan.
Rublev opens against Damir Dzumhur, with a potential second-round encounter against the winner of an all-German clash between Jan-Lennard Struff and rising star Justin Engel. If Rublev finds his rhythm, he is on course for a possible quarter-final showdown with American Brandon Nakashima.
Elsewhere in the draw, Frances Tiafoe kicks off his campaign against China’s Buyunchaokete. In the second round, he may face either Marcos Giron or veteran Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut. The American is seeded to potentially face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina or Gael Monfils in the quarter-finals. Davidovich Fokina, who holds a 1-0 head-to-head lead over Monfils, has enjoyed a strong season with finals appearances in Acapulco and Delray Beach, as well as a semi-final run in Monte-Carlo.
World No. 18 Francisco Cerundolo is another name to watch in Hamburg. The Argentine starts against Spain’s Pedro Martinez and could face Czech talent Jiri Lehecka in the second round. Cerundolo has delivered strong performances on clay recently, including a semi-final in Madrid and a Round of 16 showing in Rome, where he fell to Jannik Sinner. A quarter-final clash against fellow Argentine Sebastian Baez is on the cards if both progress. Baez begins his campaign against Camilo Ugo Carabelli.
Among the exciting young talents in the draw is 19-year-old Jakub Mensik of the Czech Republic. The rising star will make his Hamburg debut following a breakthrough season that includes a stunning win over Novak Djokovic in the Miami Masters final. Mensik currently boasts a 4-1 record against top 10 opponents in 2025 and is quickly establishing himself as one of the game’s brightest prospects.
In doubles, Finland’s Harri Heliövaara and Great Britain’s Henry Patten will look to add an ATP 500 trophy to their impressive résumés. The pair have already won Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon in 2024 and the Australian Open earlier this year and are currently ranked No. 2 in the Live Doubles ATP Rankings.
With a strong mix of homegrown talent, established stars, and rising prospects, the 2025 Hamburg Open is shaping up to be one of the most exciting stops on this year’s ATP calendar.
