Alexander Zverev gave Germany the perfect start to its Davis Cup clash with Croatia, securing the opening point in front of a home crowd in Halle.
The newly crowned US Open champion returned to action just days after his triumph in New York and showed his ability to handle another demanding assignment, defeating Croatia’s Matej Dodig in straight sets.

Although Zverev entered the contest as the higher-ranked player, Dodig refused to be intimidated.
The 21-year-old Croatian matched his opponent for long periods and forced the German star to work for the victory.
After Zverev took the first set 6–4, Dodig stayed in contention throughout the second. The set ultimately went to a tiebreak, where Zverev regained control and closed out the match 7–3.
