Bulldogs Enter Week Two With Encouraging Health News

The Georgia Bulldogs entered their Week Two matchup against Western Kentucky with plenty of attention on the health of several key players. Head coach Kirby Smart provided updates on the injury situation as No. 2 Georgia prepared for another test at Sanford Stadium.

The Bulldogs opened the season in dominant fashion, defeating Tennessee State 63-3, but the comfortable victory also gave Georgia an opportunity to manage workloads and protect players dealing with injuries.

Chase Linton Remains Week to Week

One of the most notable injury concerns surrounding Georgia is outside linebacker Chase Linton. The young pass rusher missed the season opener because of a lower-leg injury, and Smart indicated that his recovery remains uncertain.

Smart described Linton as “week to week,” meaning Georgia is taking a cautious approach rather than committing to a specific return date. Linton’s absence could affect the Bulldogs’ pass-rushing rotation, particularly as the team prepares for the more demanding portion of its schedule.

Jontae Gilbert Expected Back

There was more encouraging news regarding defensive back Jontae Gilbert. Gilbert missed the opener after suffering a finger injury involving one of the metacarpal bones.

According to Smart, Gilbert underwent surgery and was expected to be available against Western Kentucky. His return would provide Georgia with additional depth in the secondary as the Bulldogs continue developing their defensive rotation.

Drew Bobo Continues His Comeback

Georgia also received positive developments from center Drew Bobo. The offensive lineman returned to action after dealing with a foot injury that had kept him out since late last season.

Bobo started against Tennessee State and played a limited number of series before Georgia turned to other players. Smart praised his performance and ability to command the offensive line, while also indicating that his workload would be managed carefully.

Dante Dowdell Remains a Major Concern

Running back Dante Dowdell continues to face a longer recovery after suffering serious injuries in an offseason ATV accident. Dowdell recently revealed that he sustained a punctured lung, broken ribs, nerve damage in his right arm and fractures to both collarbones, among other injuries.

His recovery remains an important storyline for the Bulldogs, although there is no clear timetable for his return to football.

Georgia Focuses on Staying Healthy

With Georgia entering the season as one of the nation’s top-ranked teams, maintaining player health will be crucial. Smart’s latest updates suggest the Bulldogs are generally in solid shape, although Linton’s status remains one to monitor closely.

Georgia’s injury management will become even more important as the schedule becomes more difficult. Following Western Kentucky, the Bulldogs are scheduled to travel to Arkansas before beginning a challenging stretch of SEC competition.

For now, Smart and his staff appear committed to avoiding unnecessary risks while getting injured players back into the lineup at the right time.
