Pope Keeps Recruiting Momentum Rolling
Kentucky Wildcats head coach Mark Pope is wasting little time strengthening the program’s future. While his coaching staff prepares the current roster for the 2026-27 season, Pope is also making significant moves on the recruiting trail as he looks to build another elite Kentucky team.
The Wildcats already have an important piece committed to their 2027 recruiting class in five-star guard Ryan Hampton. His commitment has generated considerable excitement among the Kentucky fan base, but Pope and his staff clearly are not finished adding elite talent.
A Major Recruiting Trip to Florida
Pope is currently in Florida as part of his recruiting efforts, making stops to evaluate some of the nation’s most highly regarded prospects. One of his key destinations is Prolific Prep in Fort Lauderdale, where he is getting an up-close look at two five-star recruits.
Those prospects are Lewis Uvwo and Nasir Anderson, both of whom have established themselves as major names in the 2027 recruiting cycle. According to their current rankings, each player sits inside the top 10 of the class, making the visit particularly significant for Kentucky.
Landing either prospect would give the Wildcats another potential cornerstone for their future roster. Securing both would represent an enormous recruiting victory for Pope and his staff.
Uvwo Drawing Big Comparisons
Among the prospects generating considerable attention is Lewis Uvwo, whose defensive potential has led some observers to draw comparisons to former Kentucky superstar Anthony Davis.
Davis became one of the most dominant defensive players in college basketball during his time in Lexington. His combination of size, athleticism, shot-blocking ability and defensive instincts helped him become a national sensation and eventually the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft.
The comparison naturally creates high expectations, but it also highlights the type of defensive impact Uvwo could potentially bring to a program like Kentucky.

If Uvwo continues developing at his current pace, his defensive numbers could eventually become one of his biggest strengths. His athletic ability and potential as a rim protector make him an intriguing prospect for a Kentucky program that has historically valued defensive excellence.

Of course, comparisons to Davis come with enormous expectations. Davis was an exceptional college player who dominated defensively while helping Kentucky reach the pinnacle of the sport. Uvwo still has significant development ahead of him before any such comparison can truly be justified.

While Uvwo is receiving plenty of attention, Kentucky’s interest in Nasir Anderson should not be overlooked. Like Uvwo, Anderson is ranked among the top prospects in the 2027 class and has attracted attention from major college basketball programs.
For Pope, having the opportunity to evaluate two top-10 prospects at the same location makes the Florida trip especially valuable. The Wildcats can continue building relationships with both players while demonstrating why Kentucky remains one of the premier destinations in college basketball.
Kentucky Building for the Future
The commitment of Hampton has already given Kentucky a strong foundation for the 2027 class. However, Pope appears determined to surround him with more elite talent.
Visits such as the one to Prolific Prep could ultimately play an important role in determining the strength of that recruiting class. If Kentucky can add another five-star prospect—or potentially multiple players—from the current group of targets, the Wildcats could enter the next few seasons with another highly talented roster.
