Chiefs Land International Star
The PNG Chiefs have made another major statement ahead of their inaugural NRL season, confirming the signing of two-time premiership winner and New Zealand international Joseph Manu on a two-year contract.
Manu, one of the most accomplished outside backs of his generation, will join the Papua New Guinean club for the 2028 and 2029 seasons. His arrival further strengthens a roster that is rapidly taking shape as the Chiefs prepare to enter the NRL competition.
The club has fittingly labelled Manu as Player No. 007, continuing the James Bond-inspired theme attached to the signing while highlighting the quality and experience he brings to the new franchise.
A Star-Studded Roster
Manu becomes the seventh player officially signed by the Chiefs for their inaugural campaign. He joins an impressive group featuring Jarome Luai, Alex Johnston, Connor Watson, Matty Lees, Zac Lomax and Brian To’o.
The recruitment drive demonstrates the Chiefs’ determination to enter the NRL as a competitive team rather than simply serving as an expansion side finding its feet.
Manu’s experience at the highest levels of rugby league could prove particularly valuable as the club prepares to introduce its players, staff and culture to the competition.
From New Zealand to the NRL
Born in New Zealand and of Māori and Cook Island heritage, Manu developed through the junior rugby league system before establishing himself as a first-grade star.
His representative pathway included selection for the Under-19 Commonwealth Games in 2014 and the Junior Kiwis in 2015. He also enjoyed success with the Sydney Roosters in the junior ranks, winning the Under-18 competition in 2014 and the Under-20 title in 2016.
Those achievements laid the foundation for a career that would eventually see Manu become one of the NRL’s most respected players.
Premiership Glory With Roosters
Manu made his NRL debut in 2016 and quickly became an important part of the Roosters’ squad. His breakthrough was followed by the ultimate team success when he helped the club win the 2018 NRL premiership.
The Roosters went back-to-back the following season, with Manu again playing a significant role as the Tricolours secured another title in 2019.
Across 181 NRL appearances, Manu has scored 69 tries, underlining the attacking threat he can provide from the outside.
International Experience
Manu’s credentials extend beyond the NRL. The versatile back has represented New Zealand on 17 occasions and has experienced the pressure and expectations that accompany international rugby league.
His individual achievements include being awarded the prestigious Golden Boot in 2022, recognition that underlined his status as one of the leading players in the world game.
Manu is currently playing rugby union in France with Racing 92, but his next chapter will see him return to rugby league and begin a new challenge with the PNG Chiefs.
Chiefs Highlight Pacific Connection
PNG Chiefs CEO Lorna McPherson described Manu as an important addition both on and off the field, pointing to his Pacific connections and leadership qualities as key factors behind the signing.
McPherson said Manu understands the responsibility associated with representing something larger than himself and believes his presence could influence the club’s younger players and future generations of Papua New Guinean athletes.
That cultural and community connection could become an important part of Manu’s role as the Chiefs establish their identity.
Chammas Excited by Manu’s Versatility
Chiefs General Manager of Football Michael Chammas also welcomed the signing, describing Manu as a world-class footballer capable of playing multiple positions.
Chammas believes Manu’s ability to create decisive moments, combined with his experience at the highest level, will give the Chiefs another dangerous attacking weapon.
With their inaugural season still ahead, the PNG Chiefs are assembling a roster filled with established NRL talent. The addition of Manu adds another premiership-winning name to that group and raises expectations surrounding the club’s arrival in the competition.
