The Parramatta Eels have been dealt another setback in their turbulent season, with outside back Sean Russell ruled out until at least Round 23 after suffering a right quadriceps strain.
Russell’s absence adds to a mounting injury toll that has left the Eels scrambling to maintain their finals hopes. The club is already without Charlie Guymer (PCL injury), Matt Doorey (ACL), and J’Maine Hopgood (ACL), all of whom face long-term recoveries.
Meanwhile, Junior Paulo is expected to return in Round 21 following knee surgery, while Bailey Simonsson and Apa Twidle are both targeting Round 23 comebacks. Star centre Will Penisini continues to battle osteitis pubis, with his return projected between Rounds 21–23.
The Eels’ backline depth is under severe strain, with Russell, Simonsson, Twidle, and Penisini all sidelined. Their forward pack has also been weakened by the long-term losses of Doorey and Hopgood.
Coach Brad Arthur will be forced to rely on fringe players and reshuffled lineups to keep the team competitive. With finals looming, the Eels’ ability to adapt could determine whether they remain in contention.
