Fresh off a dominant 35-3 season that saw the Blue Devils capture both the ACC regular season and tournament titles, head coach Jon Scheyer and his staff find themselves at a critical crossroads. Despite earning the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, Duke’s quest for a sixth national title ended in heartbreak with a narrow Elite Eight loss to eventual national runner-up UConn. Now, with the transfer portal officially open, the focus in Durham has shifted from court strategy to roster construction.

The First Domino Falls: Darren Harris Departs

The initial week of the transfer portal window has been characterized more by exits than entrances for the Blue Devils. The most notable departure to date is sophomore guard **Darren Harris**, who officially announced his commitment to the Indiana Hoosiers on Monday. Harris, a 6-foot-5 sharpshooter from Herndon, Virginia, spent two seasons in Durham but struggled to carve out a consistent role in a crowded backcourt.

Though he saw increased minutes during Caleb Foster’s injury-related absence late in the season—notably providing depth during the ACC and NCAA Tournament runs—Harris never quite broke into the primary rotation. He finishes his Blue Devil career having appeared in 36 games this past season, averaging 3.3 points per contest. His move to Indiana offers a fresh start under Darian DeVries, where he is expected to be a key perimeter threat.

Evaluating the Roster Gaps

With Harris moving on and freshman **Nik Khamenia** also entering the portal, Scheyer is facing several pivotal decisions. The Blue Devils are also bracing for the departure of veteran big man Maliq Brown, who has exhausted his collegiate eligibility. Meanwhile, the program is currently in a “waiting game” as stars like **Isaiah Evans** and **Patrick Ngongba** weigh their options between returning to Duke or declaring for the 2026 NBA Draft.

Industry insiders suggest that Duke’s primary portal objective will be reinforcing the frontcourt. Reports indicate the staff has already expressed interest in high-profile bigs, including Alabama transfer Aiden Sherrell and Cincinnati center Moustapha Thiam.

The Six-Day Countdown

As of April 15, the transfer portal remains open for just six more days. While Duke has yet to secure an arrival, the program’s historical “financial muscle” and NIL opportunities make them a late-cycle threat for any elite talent still available. For a fan base hungry for that elusive sixth banner, the next week of activity—or lack thereof—will set the tone for the 2026-27 campaign.
