World Bank President Ajay Banga is no stranger to navigating competing political and economic pressures. But his recent participation in U.S. President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace — an initiative focused on postwar reconstruction in Gaza — has placed him under renewed scrutiny. The appointment has triggered debate over whether the leader of the world’s largest multilateral development bank can remain neutral while serving on a body perceived by some as politically charged.

The World Bank has long positioned itself as an apolitical institution dedicated to poverty reduction and development finance. Critics worry that Banga’s involvement in the Board of Peace risks blurring that line. Concerns have surfaced not only among outside observers but also internally. During a recent staff town hall, employees reportedly raised questions about how participation in the initiative could affect the institution’s reputation and perceived independence. Leveraging Finance and Expertise

Following the board’s inaugural meeting on Thursday, Banga emphasized that the World Bank would mobilize public finance, help de-risk private investment, and deploy the technical knowledge of its global staff. That approach aligns with the institution’s broader strategy of using concessional funds and guarantees to attract private capital into fragile and conflict-affected settings. Reconstruction in Gaza would likely require substantial international financing, infrastructure planning, and coordination among donors — areas where the bank has decades of experience.

Still, development experts caution that reconstruction in politically sensitive contexts carries reputational hazards. Gaza’s postwar rebuilding is deeply intertwined with geopolitics, regional security concerns, and diplomatic negotiations. Any multilateral institution involved may find itself caught between competing narratives and interests. For the World Bank, whose credibility rests on its technocratic identity, maintaining a clear separation between politics and project implementation will be critical.
