🚀 Metal fans are already gearing up for the impending farewell of one of the “Big Four” thrash pioneers, Megadeth. Earlier this year, the legendary band confirmed their plans to retire with both a final studio album and a massive farewell tour. But frontman Dave Mustaine has revealed a wish for the band’s ultimate curtain call that is truly out of this world: he wants Megadeth’s final concert to take place in space!
Speaking to Metal Hammer, Mustaine shared his audacious vision for the band’s climax. “I hope we’ll be playing up in space,” he revealed. “I think that will be a really fitting climax.”
A Gig on the Moon?
Mustaine, who is keen to go out “on top” and on the band’s own terms, stressed that he’s looking for a legitimate extraterrestrial event, not just a gimmick.
“I’m not talking about on the side of a vomit comet,” he clarified. “A gig on the Moon, a full moon landing, that would be cool.”
His interest in a cosmic farewell was sparked by observing recent developments in private space travel. “I saw they sent up a bunch of celebrities into space and I thought ‘Well, if them, why not me?’, you know?” Mustaine reasoned.
The Final Countdown
Mustaine is clearly keeping a close eye on the advancements being made by pioneers like Elon Musk and Richard Branson in interstellar travel. He expressed optimism that commercial space travel is closer than many people realize, citing the high altitudes that commercial planes already reach: “People already travel over 40,000 feet altitude, and when you get to that kind of atmosphere you’re basically already in space.”
Megadeth has only announced a handful of dates for their 2026 farewell tour so far, keeping the final details—and the date of their very last show—under wraps. Mustaine intends for the band to leave the stage at the peak of their career. “Most of them [musicians] don’t get to go out on their own terms on top, and that’s where I’m at in my life right now,” he explained in a social media post announcing the retirement.
Whether the final gig takes place in a stadium or on the lunar surface, one thing is certain: Dave Mustaine is ensuring Megadeth’s farewell will be an event for the ages.
